This past weekend, my family came to visit me! They had been in Beijing for the week, and took the bullet train from Beijing to Tianjin for the day. They arrived here around 11am and from then on, the next 8 hours were spent with them.
I met my family in the subway station near the hotel I’ve been living in, and seeing them ride up the escalator was a sight I thought I’d never see. First, we went to a restaurant for lunch with two of my friends in the program. We went to a really good dumpling restaurant and it was fun catching up and just being able to see my family members in person. I also enjoyed introducing some of my good friends I met in this program to my family. In addition, my family also got to see how my Chinese has improved as I helped order food and call the waiter over for questions.
After lunch, we stopped at my favorite drink stand on the way to Nankai University. I ordered each of my family members my favorite drinks. Since it was an extremely hot day, these cold drinks were a perfect way to show them one of my favorite restaurants as well as cool off. Some of my teachers here are from Nankai University, and although we do not live on campus, it is only a 10 minute walk away. The campus is really beautiful with a couple lakes and park-like areas. We took some nice pictures together there and enjoyed the walk.
We returned to my hotel for a quick break before I showed them where I buy my groceries as well as a nearby mall. After this short trip, it was time to eat a quick dinner at another one of my favorite restaurants nearby before I had to say goodbye. I dropped my dad, mom, brother, and grandma off at the same subway stop again and we said our goodbyes.
Although I was sad to see them go, this weekend we have a week long break and I will be traveling to Hong Kong to visit them and more of my extended family. It was really cool showing my family around the city I’ve been living in the past month and half, and I can’t wait to go visit them within the next few days!
