How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?
The program academics were different from taking classes at UW-Madison. At SLU, one semester is made up of 2 periods. We can take anywhere from 7.5 to 15 credits (this can be made up of one 7.5 course, two 7.5 courses, or one 15 credit course). I opted to take two 15 credit courses during my semester here. I thoroughly enjoy the concept of just focusing on one course each period in comparison to four classes every semester at UW-Madison. The courses are smaller and I personally found it easier to connect with other classmates and professors.
This experience has been life-changing for me and I am super grateful I took the risk to study at SLU.
What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?
I think this experience has really allowed me to learn more about who I am. I’ve been challenged and forced out of my comfort zone in so many different ways. It has really helped me become a more authentic and confident in who I am.

What is a custom, food or tradition from your host country that you are taking forward?
A custom that I will take forward from Sweden is fika. In simple terms, fika is just a coffee break. However, it encompasses so much more than that. It allows for people to really take the time in a day to slow down and be present. It can be a time to gather with friends or just sit with yourself. I find that fika really allows me to slow down and take a refresher in what I’m doing. All too often, I think that as humans we are always on “go” mode. While this is not necessarily always a bad thing, it’s important to take breaks and relax for a bit.
