What is your most memorable experience from your program?
My most memorable experiences were exploring the city late at night with my friends. There’s always something to do or see, no matter what time. I loved exploring all the night markets and seeing the temples lit up at night. It’s really hot during the day, so the best time to explore is either in the early morning or at night!
My research lab team helped make me feel at home and helped me adjust to the new lifestyle. I also met amazing friends that helped show me around and made exploring less intimidating!
What challenges or barriers did you face as you prepared to go abroad and/or during your time abroad? How did you work through them?
This was my first time living abroad, alone, in a country where English is not the predominant language. I was very nervous and didn’t know what to expect, or who I would turn to if something went wrong. I was able to work through these fears by having an amazing support system. The program facilitators were always there offering support and encouragement. My research lab team helped make me feel at home and helped me adjust to the new lifestyle. I also met amazing friends that helped show me around and made exploring less intimidating!
How will your experience benefit you in the future? How might it affect your future career or studies?
In the future, I may look for jobs outside the US as well. Living abroad was never a consideration before this internship, as I was always afraid that I may not have what it takes to adapt to a completely different lifestyle and culture. This internship has expanded my horizons and has shown me that taking risks can pay off and that with the right mindset and support, I don’t have to be afraid to try new things.
