Sunshine and Justin Timberlake

SUN! The sun has finally decided to show itself to Saint Petersburg today, and my mood is now comparable to that of a child in Disneyland. This beautiful city has so many wonderful things going for it; however, it is plagued with overcast skies. Despite a temperature of only 23 degrees F, I took it upon myself to find a nice park bench to soak up the sun on. A view of the sun is a luxury I refuse to pass up. After about a half hour, I realized that I would probably catch a cold sitting on a snow covered bench, and I reluctantly went on my merry way. Oh, how I long to feel the sun on my face again! Despite my daily regimen of vitamin D pills, nothing is comparable to being basked in beautiful rays of sunlight.

My life in this city is finally beginning to stabilize. Classes drag on, but the weeks go by surprisingly fast, and I honestly feel like I’m on the adventure of a lifetime. This past week I’ve been to a folk concert; a ballet at the Alexandrinsky Theatre; and explored the Russian Museum. I even bought tickets to the Mariinsky Theatre (one of the most famous theatres in the world) to see Anna Karenina!

Some days I even ride the metro all around town just for fun. I’ve been mistaken for a local a few times, and finally gave accurate directions this week! Hurrah! The metro in Saint Petersburg is the deepest in the world and one of the most beautiful too. The city was built on a marsh, so the city planners had to cut deep into the bedrock. Escalators take you deep into the heart of Petersburg to enter the metro stations. I especially love the metro in the evening when you can see some crazy people heading out for a night of fun or a man singing a beautiful rendition of Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back.” This city really has a unique personality of which I am still trying to get to know.

A few days ago I even made it out to the gulf of Finland with some friends. We were surprised when we stumbled upon a skate park (adjacent to the Gulf) filled with some of the most beautiful street art I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I couldn’t help but take a few photos. I even spotted a heart spray painted into the snow, dedicated to a guy’s girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

A Valentine’s day message…I’m pretty sure he was a day off. It’s the thought that counts, right?

Next week I shall be traveling to a Russian “banya” with my classmates. I can’t wait to update you all on this ancient tradition. Well, I have to go! I promised my host babushka’s grandson that I would listen to his rendition of a famous children’s show (Cheburashka) theme song on his violin. Until next time! Cheers!
