United Kingdom: Calvin Dong (Learning on Excursions)

A study abroad excursion I experienced was a day-long program where I visited Stonehenge and The Roman Baths. We met in front of the IES Center and took a coach bus to the two locations. The 2-hour ride to Stonehenge included a detailed history of the areas we drove past from our tour guide. By the time we arrived at our first location, I didn’t even realize 2 hours had passed. Stonehenge’s history ties directly with a course I was taking. As I learned about the history of London and the areas surrounding it, I got to experience it in person. There were numerous signs that informed me about the history of the monument which enhanced my understanding of landmarks in England. Afterward, we visited the Roman Baths which was an area of ancient history combined with the addition of modern restaurants, shops, and more. Walking through the baths was an immersive experience as I not only got to see ancient buildings and artifacts, but I also got to try the Bath’s famous spa water! The day was windy and rainy which added to the sensation of being in a new country and learning about its history. The trip allowed me to realize truly how rich England’s history is.

I chose City University of London because it will allow me to take on the challenge of facing uncertainty in a large city with people from diverse backgrounds. Growing up, I’ve lived predominately in the suburbs which refrained me from experiencing what city life is like. I strive to utilize the location and vast amount of culture immersed within London to learn and enjoy the unique experiences it will provide me.
