Ireland: Abi Schmeiser (Local Interactions in Limerick)

My roommates and I went to a local street art night in Limerick city. There were markers and paint, and you were encouraged to leave some mark on the walls. It was a place where people could gather, drink hot chocolate, and chat. It was a place people could leave their mark on the city, regardless of their age or where they were coming from. It was adorable to watch children write their names and impressive to see artists more talented than I was paint a picture, but my favorite part was the way the two of them were side by side, both leaving their mark on the wall.

After observing for a while, I decided to write a song lyric on the wall. I found a small spot in and among the vibrant colors and took a pink marker to the bricks. For a moment, I truly felt like I was part of Limerick, standing next to other people, sharing the artistic atmosphere with them and hoping to add a bit of beauty to the street. My song lyric was from Frank Turner’s song, “Be More Kind” which has a message I wanted to share in Limerick, even after I have left the city.

One reason I chose to attend the University of Limerick is that it offers courses related to my chemical engineering degree and fascinating area studies classes related to my International Engineering certificate, while also having wonderful clubs and societies to be involved in on campus!
