Italy: Anna Melnyk (Local Interactions)
For as long as I can remember, my love for soccer has always burned brightly. Although attending matches back home in the United States is quite enjoyable, I was eagerly looking forward to the chance of experiencing a match abroad. When the opportunity to go to an AS Roma game presented itself, I knew I had to take it. I have always loved following and watching European leagues on TV, but nothing prepared me for the in-stadium experience.

The atmosphere is absolutely electric and contagious. In Stadio Olimpico, there is only one big screen, and all the cheers and chants are naturally, non-stop produced by the fans. Unlike American sports, there is minimal production for the game-day experience which really adds to the authenticity of the atmosphere. What really stood out to me was the sense of community and connection with local Romans that the game brought. It was so endearing to be surrounded by so many enthusiastic Italian fans.
After beating Empoli by two goals, all 72,000 fans stand, wave their flags and scarves, and sing “Grazie Roma” by Antonello the whole way through (I highly recommend a listen to better picture it). It truly is so heartwarming and fun to feel the camaraderie and community in Rome. I wonder if I’ll come home with the lyrics to “Grazie Roma” memorized and calling soccer “football”.

I chose the CIEE Rome study abroad program because of the unique opportunity it presents to immerse myself in the rich history and culture of Rome while also having access to the extensive resources and support of the CIEE program. Rome, itself, is a major draw with its stunning architecture, vibrant arts and culture, and delicious food. Additionally, the CIEE program offers academic and extracurricular opportunities, as well as support services, which will enhance my experience. The combination of the city of Rome and the resources of the CIEE program make it the perfect choice for my study abroad experience.
