Italy: Anna Melnyk (Our Global Classroom)
The classroom structure of the CIEE Rome program looks nothing like what I was used to at home. Unlike the typical large lecture halls at UW-Madison, CIEE Rome is housed in an old residential palace that was converted into a learning space. The grandeur of the building was immediately apparent as I walked into my first classes three and a half months ago. A heartwarming touch is each classroom being named after a famous Roman monument– a nod to the rich cultural heritage of the city.

It isn’t just the physical building that makes the learning experience in Rome so unique. The block schedule is structured so one block lasts six weeks and we take two courses per block. I chose to study in Rome for all three blocks of the Spring semester, totaling six courses and eighteen credits. The small class size of thirty creates a tight-knit community of students and professors, too. I have found myself getting to know my classmates, professors, and the course material on a much deeper level as a result of the class structure.
Perhaps what I have enjoyed most about the CIEE Rome program has been the way learning extends beyond the traditional classroom walls. Around 70% of our class time has been spent on-site visiting ancient ruins, museums, and other cultural landmarks. The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, and the Roman Forum were just a few of my favorite visits. Exploring Rome in this way brings our studies to life and ensures our understanding when textbooks and slideshows fall short.
As my return to UW-Madison is not too far in the future, I have found myself reflecting and comparing experiences quite frequently. My CIEE Rome classrooms may have looked very different than what I was used to, but they provided a rich and immersive learning environment that I will never forget.

I chose the CIEE Rome study abroad program because of the unique opportunity it presents to immerse myself in the rich history and culture of Rome while also having access to the extensive resources and support of the CIEE program. Rome, itself, is a major draw with its stunning architecture, vibrant arts and culture, and delicious food. Additionally, the CIEE program offers academic and extracurricular opportunities, as well as support services, which will enhance my experience. The combination of the city of Rome and the resources of the CIEE program make it the perfect choice for my study abroad experience.
