Denmark: Julia Fechner (A New Experience)

Studying abroad can be a scary thing; there are so many unknowns. Leaving for Copenhagen I had millions of questions running through my head. Coming back home, only half of those questions were answered but I know I made the most of my time in Copenhagen. This is my roommate Viha. Going into it, she was one of the unknowns. Would we get along? I wonder what we have in common? Just some of the questions I asked myself on the eight hour plane ride across oceans to an entirely new continent.
After forty-eight days in Copenhagen together, I can safely say that DIS picked a good match. Roommates are supposed to bring out the best in you, and that is what Viha did for me. We pushed each other to get out of our comfort zones and explore the city. Just two girls from the midwest trying to figure out our way around Europe.
Some of our many adventures included late night 7-eleven runs, exploring the many castles of Copenhagen, and seeing Macklemore in concert at Tivoli. I am eternally grateful for this program and the opportunity it gave me to make a new best friend in a new country.

Julia Fechner
Hometown: Verona, Wisconsin
Major: Community and Environmental Sociology (intending to double major with Landscape and Urban Studies)
Program: DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia
I chose this program because Denmark is ranked number one in the world for sustainability. The two courses that I will be taking are Sustainable Development in Northern Europe and Bicycle Urbanism. As a Community and Environmental Sociology major who is considering double majoring in Landscape and Urban Studies, this program would allow me to learn more about that field.
I am looking forward to learning more about how sustainability plays a role in day to day life in Copenhagen.
