Singapore : Izzy Hartel (An Impactful Moment)

An Impactful Moment

Some yummy, allergen-free ice cream I found while exploring a food truck festival at Sentosa Beach!

There is truly so much to be learned by studying abroad, and Singapore has exceeded every single one of my expectations.

Although I expected there to be challenges and obstacles, many of them are not problems I anticipated. Culture shock was undoubtedly present, but I was ready for this. I expected the troubles navigating public transit, the curious stares from locals, and the little changes to my mannerisms as a result of different cultural norms; however, the limited access to food, toiletries, and entertainment so familiar to me have thrown me for a bit of a loop. I am used to having a strict diet due to food intolerances, a specific self-hygiene routine that has never done me wrong, and access to my favorite books, sportscasts, and movies. Now, I struggle to find foods that I can eat, constantly try to tame my frizzy hair, and battle with my poor planning skills.

At first, these things were undeniably frustrating, but even though I have not fully found solutions to all of my minor problems, these obstacles have reminded me that they are just that: minor problems. I have started to embrace the world around me and used my adventures to learn more about myself and what really matters to me. Through these new experiences in a location that has taught me to love the discomfort, I have found new foods I cannot seem to get enough of, learned to look past my small imperfections that truly do not matter in the grand scheme of things, and became even more grateful for the experiences I am able to have and the people I am able to meet. Despite the road blocks along the way, studying abroad in Singapore is such an extraordinary experience that I would not change for the world.

While studying abroad in Singapore, I hope to broaden my knowledge of world cultures and history by participating in festivals, getting involved in student groups on campus, and taking different classes relevant to the rich history and lifestyle of Singapore! Throughout the program, I hope to further my interpersonal skills and navigate an unfamiliar environment and culture.

Not only have I dreamed of traveling to Singapore since I was young, but I have grown a strong appreciation for the environmentalism that their country promotes. Their program is one of the most prestigious and academically challenging across Asia.
