England: Natalia Torres (The 5 senses in Leeds)

I arrived in Leeds merely a week ago, but every day, I note how lively the city is and find interest in anything that crosses my path. I have felt well integrated with the city and university from the culture, interactions with locals, and events. Through this blog post, I aim to showcase Leeds through the five senses, allowing one to feel as if they are studying abroad in Leeds.

See

Walking through campus and the city, I have noticed a fusion of modern and older architecture. Every building has its unique features that bring much character to the city. My favorite building has been the Leeds Town Hall. It is located near the city center and is surrounded by local shops, an art gallery, bus stops, and many restaurants.

Taste

Leeds is a very diverse city with restaurants serving a variety of cuisines. I have found restaurants catered to students in every corner of the university’s surrounding area. I have seen restaurants serving cuisines from Lebanon, Italy, China, and more within one street. There is even a fish and chips shop nearby! One of my first meals in Leeds was at a restaurant called La Besi, located across from the School of Engineering. La Besi has incredibly fresh Italian food and a phenomenal presentation of the dishes. Without a doubt, Leeds is a great city to try new cuisines.

Smell

I have never lived in a big city compared to Leeds. I was quite surprised that there was a sense of fresh air while I walked around campus. Such observations make sense due to the abundance of trees. Beyond campus, there are local parks that many choose to visit when the weather is nice. Recently, the weather has been quite favorable, with not much rain and many sunny days. I am glad I can enjoy the fresh air and nice weather.

Hear

The city center of Leeds, notably Trinity Leeds, is known for being one of the city’s most lively areas. Walking through the city center, I can hear street performers and vendors. Since it is the first week before classes, many students are out with friends, chatting about their student accommodation and weekend plans. Trinity Leeds is especially busy now due to the start of the academic year, with many students buying clothes and electronics. Through the bustling sounds of the city center and Trinity Leeds, I have felt more integrated with the city.

Feel

I was very nervous coming to Leeds, a common feeling among exchange students. Yet, I have felt so welcomed by students and locals. Many are willing to give directions and restaurant recommendations. The kindness from the many people I met has allowed me to feel a part of the community. Leeds and its surrounding areas are known to be very welcoming, and I can attest to that.

Hometown: Sparta, Wisconsin

Major: International Studies; Information Science; Cert in Political Science

Program: University of Leeds Exchange

I chose to study at the University of Leeds because I can continue taking courses for my International Studies major and certificate in Political Science. Since those are two fields I plan to work in the future, it is essential that I gain a global experience through studying abroad, in which I will have the opportunity to learn more about theories and international issues in a new setting. My time at Leeds will complement my educational aspirations through coursework, faculty, and fellow classmates.
