This photo, taken outside of one of my school buildings, captures much of what I love about Amsterdam. I’ve joined the masses, and a bike is now how I get everywhere I need to go around the city. Every morning I bike to class, often stopping for a latte and a croissant before I arrive on campus. Not only is biking less expensive than driving a car or using public transport, but it drastically decreases traffic on the city’s roads and makes for a far more sustainable routine.

While the weather is still warm, students gather in the green spaces and along the canals, chatting or eating a snack between classes. This block I am taking two courses, Clinical Developmental and Health Psychology, as well as Introduction to Violence. During the week while I am not in class, I spend a lot of my time reading course material and completing assignments at one of the university’s libraries or in a nearby coffee shop. After studying, I like to make time to explore more of what Amsterdam has to offer, like the city’s many museums and array of thrift and vintage shops. As it gets dark, I might meet a friend for a drink to unwind after a busy day. Most bars and restaurants have patios and outdoor seating, providing the perfect place to sit and watch the boats drift down the canals and the people bike home from work.
