England: Cindy Liu (A New Experience)

The weekend before school starts is always full of bittersweet moments, this year, my friends and I chose to celebrate it by going to the famous Borough Market located in central London. It is known for the fresh vegetables and fruits available, and a huge market contains various cuisines from different countries around the world.

One thing I have noticed since coming to London is that whenever you walk on the street you can always hear a language that is not English. You can always spot people wearing different cultural outfits and speaking their own languages which makes this city seem even more diverse and has an open arm to anyone around the world. I am so used to hearing and speaking English wherever I go and expecting everyone to understand it in the US, but now in London, I am reminded that there are also so many more beautiful languages and cultures to be found in every corner of the city.

We spent an entire afternoon at the Borough Market trying out foods from different countries: India, Norway, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and so much more. Before the market closed at 5 p.m., my friend and I picked an Iraqi place to have our dinner and the flavor is one I will remember forever. And there we sat, two Asians in the city of London surrounded by people from all over the world and enjoying our dinner from Iraq. The diversity of London will always be an experience that I find thrilling and eye-opening.
