Denmark: Gaby Johnson
Program: DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia, Summer
Gaby’s Major: Zoology, Environmental Studies, Conservation Biology

What is your most memorable experience from your program?
One of my favorite and most memorable experiences from my program was swimming in the canals. Many Danes incorporate swimming into their daily routines, so it was exciting to do the same. I also loved driving a boat around the canals with my friends. Exploring the canals are a must, especially with the warm summer weather!
I would recommend considering classes outside of your major. There are so many cool options for courses and I’ve only heard great things about the professors. I would also recommend attending the DIS welcome events, I met some of my friends there and it’s a good way to meet people outside of your classes.
How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?
The school work in Denmark was much more discussion based than at UW-Madison, which for my major often consists more of independent homework. Additionally, many of my assignments were more open to creativity and were often completed in groups. One of my courses, Sustainable Development in Northern Europe, only used our classroom space for three lessons, which allowed us to walk around the city and learn by exploring Copenhagen, which I enjoyed as I got to learn more about my host city while in class.
What is your advice for someone considering your program?
