Denmark: Eli Hyman (A New Experience)

Out the door with my roommates. A five-minute walk through downtown takes me to a ferry stop. The beautiful canal is glistening. A mermaid statue stands tall and beautiful. I can smell the fresh water and the wind carries the undeniable smell of street food. The ferry rocks back and forth and eventually settled in front of us. We board and after a tranquil 4 minute glide we have arrived. Reffen: a street food fair located on the edge of a small isthmus. Lights twinkle, neon reds and greens. To my left is a skate park where Danes are showing off their tricks. To my right are 50 trucks and stands, with every kind of food you can imagine: French, American, Greek, Italian just to name a few. The island is bustling with energy, I felt a sort of electricity in the air. I stand caught my eye. 50 yards to my right there was a man standing in front a massive metal slab covered in red-hot stones. On top of those stones were ten different meats skewered and searing. The smoke was so thick there was a grey cloud over the stand. It was Kurdish street food. I ordered the plate. Twelve minutes later I was with my friends at my table, staring at one of the best looking meals I’ve ever seen in my life. Chicken and lamb kebab over a bed of pickled cabbage and wild rice. Mint yoghurt sauce was drizzled delicately over top. The meal was immaculate. It was a wonderful dinner. If you are a foodie, Reffen is the place for you.
