Netherlands: June Glenney (Home Away From Home in Amsterdam)

As the holiday season approaches, Amsterdam has transformed into an even more magical place. I’ve enjoyed the cozy interiors of bars and cafes, as well as the sweet markets and canals lined with light. Soon, ice skating rinks will pop up around the city, and the locals are crossing their fingers that the canals will freeze over this year. I’ve only ever spent the holidays in the states, so it has been very interesting and exciting to watch them unfold in a new country. I’ve learned about Dutch holiday traditions, like Sinterklaas, which occurs every year on December 5th. This day is a celebration in which Saint Nicholas comes by boat to deliver presents to the city’s children. Christmas lasts two days here, maximizing the family togetherness that is one of the most important aspects of the Dutch holiday.
I’ve indulged in some of the season’s treats as well, like Speculaas, a type of spiced biscuits. While simultaneously embracing a new cultures’ holiday customs, I’ve maintained my own traditions as well. In the coming week, two friends of mine from the states are coming to visit, and we plan to host a real American Thanksgiving. I plan to introduce them to some of the classic Dutch treats, as well, honoring both the old and the new.
