A Home Away from Home in Seoul

Several waterfalls spill into a river, coming from a hill covered in trees.

Being in Seoul has brought on a ton of new experiences.

I remember how shocked I was using the subway to get to places. Never having used a subway system before, I was amazed by the efficient public transportation. Three months later, it’s normal for me to hop on the subway and think it should exist everywhere in the US. I didn’t know it was possible to last this long without using a car, but Seoul made it happen.

Cafés are also something that has become a part of my everyday life. The café culture here in Seoul is HUGE! There are cafés everywhere, and most of them are great study places. More students study in cafés than libraries here – including me. My favorite café to study at is right in front of my university. Still, others are very pretty and have good desserts and drinks!

Once I go back home, I will miss the Han River and Hongdae. The Han River has been one of the staple hangout spots for me and my friends. We usually eat and play games there, and they sometimes host cool events in the area! It is also the best place to eat ramen and Korean fried chicken because, somehow, being by the river makes the food taste so much better. Another staple is the Hongdae neighborhood in Seoul because there is so much to do there – shop, arcade, karaoke, watch busking performances, eat more chicken – all in one area. It is a very lively place that is never boring to be in!
