Final Reflections

Before I came to Cape Town, I discovered the phrase ‘Ubuntu,” which refers to “humanity towards others” or the value of community. When I arrived, this was something I eagerly yearned to experience but I soon doubted if I truly could. Like many at the beginning of studying abroad, I had a rough transition and I found myself losing hope. However, my curious spirit emerged, and I was compelled to venture beyond the initial haze to discover the city’s captivating allure. Immediately, I felt the warm embrace of a city that welcomes people with open arms and a shoulder to lean on.

When I entered shops and heard West African music, I would take delight at the closeness of my own culture with those of South Africa and glow with contentment as I adjusted to life in a land that was no longer so foreign. Here, older women often refer to younger women with endearing terms that inspired a soft and nourishing feeling within me. Instantly, my spirit was lifted and from that point on, I decided to be intentional about every action and move that I made to ensure that my overall time here was one that I would never forget.

But I knew that this would only be possible if I became a part of a community that also shared my values. A community that I could put my trust into who could also put their trust into me.
Out of everything I have done, everything I have seen, and every flavor that has danced across my taste buds, nothing comes close to the people I have been able to form relationships with. They have provided me with an indescribable amount of joy that has ushered in new way of thinking in my life. I have learned that moving with intention in my day-to-day decisions is key to prosperity and happiness. That Ubuntu is indeed a reality.
