England: Stella Newman (Food in London)
Food in London
Food influences in London are vast from traditional British food to South Asian. I have had the pleasure of tasting a large variety of the foods London has to offer over the course of these past 5 months. London is an extremely diverse city and an international hub. The local cuisine reflects this multiculturalism. I have eaten more traditional foods such as minced meat pie, Sunday roast, and sticky toffee pudding. I have indulged in rich curry, dumplings, risotto and so much more. I have had the opportunity to try foods that I’ve never had before such as bibimbap, clotted cream, Malaysian roti with lamb, Korean hotdogs, and a lot more. I have dined at a variety of restaurants, both sit-down and fast food. Some London fast food staples for me and my friends are Nandos, Pret, and the Tesco Express. While traveling I have had Scottish seafood, traditional Slovakian Christmas food, and Currywurst.
More recently I visited Borough Market for my Food, Society, and Culture class to gather research for an ethnographic paper. I visited a variety of different vendors and not only tried their products but learned about them and their businesses. Some products that were new to me were Turkish Helva, Swedish Honey, and Belper Knolle cheese. All of these products are things I will be returning to Borough Market for!
