A Home Away from Home in Singapore

As I pick my final blog prompt for the semester, I thought it would only be right to pick one that allows me to reflect on the amazing opportunities I have had here in Singapore! This country has truly been transformative to my development as a young adult and aspiring professional. Although this blog will not cover all of my favorite experiences in Singapore, it will share key moments and spots that will always bring me the fondest memories of this semester.
The first that comes to mind, is walking every morning to our local corner shop and grabbing a freshly cut piece of pineapple and an iced Milo, one of the most prominent drinks in Singapore and my personal favorite. The hospitality of the owners was very warm, and I looked forward to developing our relationships daily. I began a pattern of going at the same time, grabbing the same goods, and sharing the same laughs with the crew there. I will miss these small moments and wish them nothing but the best in the future!
The second memory that comes to mind is more of a generality, but still impactful on my life. I will always remember the greenery, and walking all of the gardens that I could. Whether it was the morning runs in Kent Ridge Park, the 7-mile hike alongside wild monkeys (yes wild monkeys) in MacRitchie Reservoir, peaceful walks in the Botanic Gardens, or watching night shows at Gardens by the Bay. I bring this collection of memories up because the act of walking through a park is metaphorically significant to my personal growth while abroad: learning as I go, taking in the moment, and smiling as I view all the beauty.
This exchange program at the National University of Singapore has brought me an entirely new perspective, and so much joy in life. I look forward to building a lifelong relationship with Singapore and will happily reflect on my time here as I return home.
