How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?
Most of the classes I took only met twice a week, one lecture and one practical, two hours each. This significantly reduced the stress of school, and enabled my personal and social growth. The grading scheme is a little less intense – I generally didn’t have a weekly assignment to complete. In some ways this is good, as you have almost complete freedom in how you study, but if you struggle with time management like I do this can be tricky. Set a study schedule and stick to it!
What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?
Aside from the classes I took that counted towards my degree, I am more me than ever. It’s hard to describe such a transformative experience to someone who hasn’t felt it or needed it. If you feel like you’re just going through the motions of life, or that you have to be someone else to be liked, I highly recommend studying abroad. The best part is that all of my friends in Wisconsin are still with me, I was just mistaken in who I felt like I had to be. I never would have realized this without studying abroad.
I value my personal growth abroad more than anything.
What is your most memorable experience from your program?
The lifestyle! Two entire world-class coasts just a train ride away from CBD; riding a ferry on the Brisbane River to class; trains and busses to get everywhere else (no car needed!); crystal clear blue skies four days of the week; the best East Asian cuisine you’ll see outside of the real thing; an easy-going, loving people who I miss dearly.

What challenges or barriers did you face as you prepared to go abroad and/or during your time abroad? How did you work through them?
I got cold feet – ICE cold feet – while waiting for my international flight. I think it’s a right of passage. I powered through as the plane tickets are not refundable, haha, but I’m so glad I did. Don’t back out, it’s so worth it!
What is a custom, food or tradition from your host country that you are taking forward?
Tea time (a snack between breakfast and lunch as well as between lunch and dinner) is great, as well as actually good espresso and a good Australian snag. Not many cuisines are culturally attributable to Australia but those last two they knock out of the park. Also, adding beetroot and fried egg to your burger: unbelievably good.
