The Challenge of Finding Balance

A stone fountain with four people holding up the top of the fountain is surrounded by green and purple tropical plants.
On a leisure walk, I came upon a beautiful fountain. This was taken near the D.C. Botanical gardens, which explains the beautiful and diverse greenery.

One of the most eye-opening moments for me during this program has been learning how to maintain a healthy work-life balance while juggling multiple responsibilities. With three academic courses and an internship that averages around 30 hours a week, I’ve had to become very intentional with my time. It’s been a challenge to ensure that I’m giving my all to both my coursework and my internship without letting either suffer.

At first, I found myself overwhelmed by the fast pace and the long hours. But I quickly realized that meticulous planning was key. I now make weekly schedules to map out my work commitments, class assignments, and personal time. It’s helped me feel more in control and has prevented burnout. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of taking breaks—even if just for a short walk around the Capitol grounds or a quick coffee with a beautiful view. These moments of pause help me recharge and remind me to appreciate the opportunity I have to be here.

The beautiful interior of the Union Station, where a wide variety of restaurants and diverse shops can be located, as well as being the central hub to the Metro (train) system.

Learning how to balance my work and personal life while being in such a stimulating environment has been one of the most valuable lessons of this program. It’s something I’ll carry with me, not just in my academic pursuits but in my future career as well.
