Australia: Kyree Cooke (A Home Away from Home in Canberra)
Serenity Outside the Bustling City

During my time at the Australian National University, I have made sure to explore Canberra’s local landscape. To do so, my friend and I decided to ride bikes around the Lake Burley Griffin Loop. Many might think of the Australian Capital Territory as an area sprawling with urban infrastructure and government buildings, however, the city boasts gorgeous outdoor spaces and natural beauty. Lake Burley Griffin is in the center of Canberra and is well-known for being a wildlife refuge and bird habitat.
The lake was completed in 1963 after the damming of the Molonglo River, a body of water significant to the Ngunnawal people, and is named after Walter Burley Griffin, the original designer of the city. In exploring my new environment, my friend and I rented electric bikes and went on a 28 klm bike ride. We were met with scenic views, gorgeous gardens, and a sense of tranquility. Others were also outside appreciating the magnificent landscape by kayaking, sailing, and fishing. I enjoyed the opportunity to explore the path, reflect by the water, and stay active while remaining near the city. It was also refreshing to experience the deliberately designed green space with a good friend of mine and understand the cultural importance of the land as well.
