How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?

Classes were different because they were all online at Massey-Albany. This took an adjustment for me because attending class in person normally helps me stay on track for the curriculum and workload. However, in the end having classes online was amazing once I got into my own routine because it allowed me the flexibility to explore New Zealand’s beautiful environment and scenery and not fall behind on coursework.

What is your most memorable experience from your program?

There are countless memorable experiences I had abroad, but one of my favorites was taking a dolphin and whale spotting tour out of Auckland Bay. My friends and I spent the afternoon on the water, enjoying the sun and getting to see beautiful marine life. We also borrowed a friend’s digital camera to take with us, so we were able to take lots of high-quality photos of the dolphins that swam right up next to our boat!

How will your experience benefit you in the future? How might it affect your future career or studies?

My study abroad program shaped my future career interests greatly. It was my first time living on the ocean (since I am from Wisconsin), and therefore my first real exposure to marine science. After studying statistics and Spanish for my undergraduate degrees, my time abroad influenced my decision to shift focus into the marine sphere. I am hoping to return to New Zealand in the next year or so to pursue marine science at the University of Auckland.
