Participant-Observation: Finding Motivation in a Bustling City

London is a fantastic city with endless things to do. However, life can get overwhelming being far from home and the life you used to be surrounded by. One thing that has helped me stay on task and up-to-date in my classes has been taking my studies elsewhere. I try to work outside my room and usually go to the V&A and Hyde Park. Most of my classes have weekly readings, which can be overwhelming if procrastination persists. I have recently been downloading my readings for a change in scenery. Hyde Park has been the perfect outlet for my readings. I usually find a bench or patch of dry grass and get to work. The last time I went, I intended to finish my readings, but something was just not clicking. I couldn’t focus, so I shut my computer and dissociate.

The area I’m sitting in is not secluded but not bustling. I notice a dog run by, leaving me reminiscent of my dogs back home. I continued to people-watch a bit but became preoccupied with the temperature around me. It’s pretty brisk, with the wind inviting goosebumps. Soon, my mind wandered to the chirping of birds. A school of pigeons was approaching, but to my ease, they just wandered away. I decided I needed to find a new spot. After a short but much-needed walk, I found a new spot. At this new spot, I opened my readings again and felt motivated.

Living in London, I have found that one of the best things you can do for yourself is to go outdoors and walk. It always leaves me clearheaded. Even just putting away the phone and sitting in a park can be therapeutic. Furthermore, it can be nice just to observe one’s surroundings, whether that’s in a park, bus, train, on the street, etc. Sometimes, a break is the productivity solution, but changing scenery can always aid your motivation or mental state.
