The Duomo’s 135 spires create a breathtaking silhouette against the Milanese skyline

The first day I arrived in Milan, I took the train from the airport and then the metro into the city. When I emerged from the underground metro, I was awestruck to find myself right next to the Duomo. Undoubtedly Milan’s biggest attraction, this cathedral, which took over 500 years to build, deserves all the attention it gets. The stunning white marble masterpiece spans an entire city block, showcasing intricate architectural details. It truly is one of a kind.

Fortunately, Bocconi and my accommodation are only a mile away from the Duomo and other key landmarks in Milan. Even though the area is always bustling, I love walking down to the Duomo to admire its beauty.

The tour allows you to walk on top of the cathedral’s roof, appreciating the outside architecture up close with a great view of Milan!

When my family visited Milan, we took the opportunity to tour the Duomo and visit its museum. The tour described the purpose behind the various features and pointed out details I never would have noticed on my own. To deepen our appreciation, we spent hours next door viewing the cathedral’s museum, which details its construction, ongoing restoration efforts, and preserved original pieces now housed indoors. Visiting the museum and exploring the Duomo’s interior enhanced my fascination with this stunning landmark.

I highly recommend taking the time to visit historical landmarks while studying abroad, and even more so, to learn about the history behind them. One thing I found helpful was free audio guides available online or on apps. On a day trip to Rome, I used 4-5 audio guides, popping in my headphones to explore museums, landmarks, and guided walking tours throughout the city. This was a great way to deepen my appreciation for each location and the history behind it (for free!)

I’ll always remember my first day in Milan and the unforgettable sight of the Duomo. There truly is nothing like it in the States, and I’m so grateful to be able to casually stroll by it on any average day. Understanding the history behind these beautiful landmarks like the Duomo has been one of my favorite parts of studying abroad. The uniqueness of each sight is something you can’t find back home!

One reason I chose Bocconi University because it had the best selection of finance classes that allow me continue completing degree requirements while abroad.

I am looking forward to learning about the culture of Milan through sightseeing of all parts of the city, trying as much authentic food as possible, and taking in the rich history through museums and historic landmarks.
