My First Year of College Abroad

When I first enrolled in this program, I was particularly drawn to the experiential learning and classes based on British life and cultures. I understood that these opportunities would transcend any previous classroom experiences I had encountered. However, what I didn’t fully understand was how much my academic work would extend beyond the classroom. When I learned about subcultural movements and music through Britain in the post war period, I found myself seeing their traces and lasting impacts as I walk through the streets every day. We studied the rise in multiculturalism and the lasting impacts of empire on identity in the country, but I actually live those studies out every day when surrounded by strangers on the tube, browsing restaurants to eat at, or meeting other university students. I’ve learned not to separate the school day and my free time but see how they intertwine and how I can apply my studies outside of the classroom. Living in London, I have also acquired essential time management and life skills that will be invaluable upon my return to campus. I have learned to grocery shop, meal prep, and stay organized while constantly living and being surrounded by other personalities. Furthermore, the connectivity of London to the rest of Europe and the travel opportunities have enhanced my time management skills. I am now proud at my ability to plan travel itineraries, prepare for various modes of transportation in other languages and countries, and balancing my academic responsibilities with personal activities. This program has significantly boosted my self-confidence and independence, making me feel well-prepared to manage my time effectively when I return to Madison. Every aspect of this program has broadened my understanding of the world and other people, but most importantly, it has provided profound insights into myself.
