A Home Away from Home in London

Looking back on my time living in London, I realize how much this city has become a home away from home. The initial feelings of uncertainty and doubt faded as I navigated the various boroughs and immersed myself in the rich tapestry of culture and history that London offers. Every corner of the city held a new adventure, and several of those places have become parts of my daily routine that I will miss very much when I leave. One of my favorite spots is the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). The stunning architecture and collection of art never fails to take my breath away. I love wandering through the galleries, losing track and exploring everything from theater to sculpture. It’s a place where I can immerse myself in creativity. Additionally, it is only a 5-minute walk from my flat, so it has become a convenient and reliable study location. I can count on free Wi-Fi, stunning research rooms, delicious cafe items, and a wide range of different exhibits that provide a change of scenery between school projects.

A path lined with bushes and trees leads to a black, metal gate. Behind is a hollow, square structures with a tall spire and archways.

Also close to our flat, walking through Kensington Gardens is a daily pleasure. I often find myself sitting by the Serpentine, watching the swans glide across the water. It’s a perfect spot for reflection and enjoying nature, and I’ll miss those serene moments surrounded by such beauty. The gardens also provide a really convenient way to stay active, as there are so many different running routes I really enjoy. I wake up and spend every morning on a new trail. On the weekends, I have made it a habit to head over to Hackney at least once. Broadway Market is my favorite spot to find delicious food and a more vibrant local culture. I love the artsy, musical vibe, and how it is not swamped with tourists. The stalls offer everything from fresh produce to clothing to secondhand novels, and there is a strong sense of community. I love grabbing a tea and people-watching or trying out new dishes from different vendors. This market has become a staple in my routine, and I’ll miss the energy and flavors it brings.

A street is crowded with people. Red lanterns are hanging between buildings, and halfway down the street is a Torrey gate with Chinese characters.

Lastly, Chinatown holds a special place in my heart. The colorful streets, aromatic restaurants, and unique shops are so enthralling. There is always laughter and light in the area, and my friends and I have found some super amazing spots that we have become regulars at. The sense of culture and community here is something I’ll truly miss. Reflecting on those experiences, I can see how London shaped me, turning what started as a temporary stay into a profound connection with a place that feels like a second home. The memories I created here will always remind me of the beauty of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing the world.
