Czech Republic: Violette Simon (Places: Routine and Favorite)

Before coming to Prague, I rarely ran, and when I did, it required an incredible amount of willpower. There’s a well-kept track just behind our dorms here in Prague that I try to use as often as possible, especially with friends (which I much prefer), though I’ll go alone if I have to. The air smells like earth and sweat, and I often see Czech college students playing soccer on the field or groups of young kids running around. I never expected that jogging would give me a glimpse into what growing up in the Czech Republic would be like.
My favorite place, though, is hidden just behind the Kafka Museum in Prague 1. This area is often rampant with tourists, but this little nook I found is almost always quiet, allowing me to absorb the atmosphere of Prague without distraction. I like to sit on a barrier and look out over the Vltava River, the sun warming my face as I take in the view of the Charles Bridge. Down the street is Shakespeare a synové, a lovely bookstore I’m obsessed with. I bought a Kafka book there (I’m only on page 34 of 492, but I’m determined to finish, his stories are very peculiar) and plan to collect more before I leave. During the earlier colder months, I’d read in the chairs downstairs, but now that spring is here, I bring my book back to the nook and read in the sun. It’s peaceful, personal, and reminds me to slow down and enjoy this experience.

I’m excited to learn more about the unique architecture in Prague. I chose my program because the classes incorporate sustainability and engineering.
