A Day in the Life in Barcelona

Waking up in Barcelona is like opening your eyes in the middle of a painting. My days begin at 6:30 a.m., when I head down to the gym in my building for a morning workout. It’s a routine that keeps me focused and helps set a positive tone for the day.

Hearty Breakfast I had last Saturday with my friends at a restaurant here in Barcelona called Billy Brunch. Delicious!

Afterward, I grab a quick breakfast—usually pan con tomate and a café con leche—before catching the metro from Diagonal to the IES Abroad Center near Plaça de Catalunya. The ride is short but always filled with character. From Gaudí’s architecture to street performers along Las Ramblas, my commute reminds me how much culture is built into everyday life here.

Classes start at 9:00 a.m. I’m taking political science and international relations courses, and one of my favorites focuses on EU policy. Studying this while living in a region where Catalan independence is actively discussed brings the material to life. We’ve had guest speakers, including local policymakers, which adds valuable real-world perspective.

After class, I usually meet up with friends for lunch—most often enjoying a menú del día that includes fresh seafood or paella. In the afternoon, I study at a local café then relax by the beach with a book. My favorite spot in the city is Barceloneta Beach. Whether I’m watching the waves or catching the sunset, it’s always a moment of peace.

Evenings are for unwinding. After I finish my assignments and read for the next days lesson, I meet up with friends to play fútbol on the beach. If we have time, we’ll stay and watch the sun go down over the water. Before heading to bed, I usually call my family back home to keep them updated on everything going on.

Living in Barcelona has also made me more aware of sustainability. Public transportation is easy and widely used, recycling is a normal part of life, and many people bring their own bags when shopping. These are small habits I plan to bring back home with me.
Barcelona has become a second home—a place full of routines, culture, and simple moments that I’ll definitely miss.
