Japan: Megan Stevens (“We’re Not in Madison Anymore” Moment)

The moment I stepped into the bustling, fast-paced environment of Tokyo station, I knew that I wasn’t in Madison anymore. With 2 bags in tow and a severe lack of sleep, I took my first step into my new home for the semester. I learned quickly that Japan’s train system is nothing short of amazing. The transit system here is so efficient and well organized. Getting to new places takes no time at all and, while it took a little bit of time to get used to, I love taking the trains now and appreciate the beauty of Japan’s public transportation.

As I entered the Shinkansen (bullet train) to go from Tokyo to Kyoto, I couldn’t help but feel overjoyed and overwhelmed. At extremely fast speeds, the Shinkansen took me to Kyoto with a stunning view of the ocean. I rarely looked at my phone as I didn’t want to miss even a second of the world around me. Getting to my dorm that first day was no easy task, but every single person I talked to couldn’t have been more friendly. So many people in Japan are not only extremely polite, but also very considerate of others. When I struggled with my suitcases or messed up the ticket system, those around me helped me without a second thought. There is an unspoken care and empathy for others that I extremely appreciate. In the first couple of days in Kyoto, I spent my time just observing and taking everything in. I took walks around my dorm just to observe the streets, stores, people, and nature. I had to get used to a couple things right away, such as cars driving on the left side and many around me riding a bike. I absolutely love how most everyone uses bikes, buses, or trains, rather than cars. This will definitely be something that I will have to get used to again once I return to America. Every day, I learn more about Japanese culture and realize something new. I look forward to attending classes, meeting new people, and having new experiences. It is such an honor to learn more about someone else’s culture, and I appreciate every moment I spend in this beautiful country.

I chose Kyoto as I wanted to immerse myself in Japanese culture and student life. I also wanted to explore Japan’s historical buildings and shrines– which Kyoto is especially known for!  While in Kyoto, Japan, I want to become more fluent in Japanese, meet new people, and explore Japan’s beautiful nature and culture.
