What is your most memorable experience from your program?

One of my most memorable experiences from my program was going on a tour of the Danish Parliament with my class and being able to meet a current member of parliament. It was fascinating to gain insight into how Denmark’s political system operates and to engage in meaningful conversation with someone actively involved in the legislative process. This experience allowed for a more engaging learning experience outside the classroom, and allowed real world discussions on course material.

How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?

The academic experience in my study abroad program was fairly similar to taking classes at UW-Madison. The smaller class sizes and more discussion based format abroad encouraged closer interaction with professors and classmates, fostering a collaborative learning environment. The curriculum often incorporated local perspectives and firsthand experiences, such as site visits and meetings with community members, which enriched the coursework in ways that are less common at UW-Madison. The program was able to offer a blend of academic rigor and immersive learning that complemented my studies back home.

Interactions with fellow study abroad students, locals, and professionals challenged me to consider new viewpoints different from my own and foster personal growth.

What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?

Through my study abroad experience, I learned how important it is to stay open minded and adaptable. Immersing myself in Danish culture, where values such as trust, equality, and a strong work-life balance are central, encouraged me to reflect on the ways different societies prioritize well-being and community. Interactions with fellow study abroad students, locals, and professionals challenged me to consider new viewpoints different from my own and foster personal growth. Being within this new culture challenged me to reflect on my own goals and what I prioritize within my own life.

What is the moment you are most proud of?

The moment I’m most proud of during my study abroad experience was stepping outside of my comfort zone to engage in meaningful conversations with locals and classmates from around the world. Whether it was navigating unfamiliar cities, participating in class discussions, or connecting with people from different cultural backgrounds, I grew more confident and independent. These moments helped me build skills that I know will stay with me long after the program ended.

What is a custom, food or tradition from your host country that you are taking forward?

One Danish tradition that I am excited to carry forward is the concept of ‘hygge.’ This idea of creating a cozy, warm atmosphere and appreciating simple moments with friends and family resonated deeply with me during my time in Denmark. Whether it was enjoying homemade dinners or relaxed gatherings, hygge emphasizes mindfulness, connection, and comfort in everyday life. I plan to incorporate this practice into my routine to foster a greater sense of well-being and presence with myself and friends, even amidst a busy schedule.
