How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?

My program was different from taking classes at UW-Madison as it was almost completely focused on research. I worked in a dry lab, so my schedule was extremely flexible and I was able to complete my research from anywhere at any time. This flexibility was part of the reason I was able to not only travel so much in six weeks, but also take an online class at UW-Madison while I was abroad. Additionally, I worked in a small group with two other women, and directly interacted with our mentor on our research project. I enjoyed working in a small group, which allowed us to share the workload along with bouncing ideas off of each other. I also enjoyed the direct contact with my PI, receiving feedback and advice from him. This is something that you don’t always get from professors instructing classes.

Describe your internship, research, or fieldwork and how the experience helped advance your career or studies.

The research lab I completed research in is a neurology lab that focuses on changes in the brain due to mood disorders (Unipolar and Bipolar Depression). The research paper I worked on investigates neural resilience factors that protect against the development of mood disorders in high-risk populations. This research I completed allowed me to learn more about neurology which directly relates to the Alzheimer’s research I already completed on campus.

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, work hard, learn directly from professionals, and collaborate closely with other motivated students, then the DIS Research Assistant program is a perfect fit.

How will your experience benefit you in the future? How might it affect your future career or studies?

The research I completed during my study abroad trip is in the process of being reviewed and will hopefully be published by the end of the year. This experience not only taught me so much about working in a collaborative lab environment, conducting research, and academic writing, but has also made me a more competitive applicant for future programs.

What is your advice for someone considering your program?

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, work hard, learn directly from professionals, and collaborate closely with other motivated students, then the DIS Research Assistant program is a perfect fit. It will stretch your skills as both a student and a researcher, but the rewards are well worth it. You’ll be immersed in a community of passionate, like-minded individuals who share your curiosity and drive to learn. I met so many amazing people and made friendships and memories that I will treasure forever!
