Spain: Madison Packard (A New Experience)

Before my study abroad program, I had never been to Europe. In fact, I had never left North America. The moment that I received my acceptance for my study abroad experience in Spain, I knew that I was in for the experience of a lifetime.

In Alcalá de Henares, my home base in Spain, my daily life has been very consistent and similar to my experience throughout the school year in Madison. However, the weekends were a different experience. Because our weekends were three days, there was quite a bit of time to spend travelling after studying

A gorgeous view of my hike!

One of my most memorable excursions throughout my time in Spain was my trip to Asturais, Spain. The Wednesday before our weekend in Asturias, my friend and I did not have travel plans. We were frantically searching for affordable last minute options, when my friend discovered a small town in Asturias called Llanes. It seemed like the perfect outdoorsy getaway complete with beaches and ocean cliffs.

After a five hour drive to the north of Spain, we arrived. Although we did experience a couple of bumps in the road, it would all be worth it.

The following day, my friend and I decided to hike along the cliffside near the ocean that a woman we had been travelling with recommended to us. I do not know what my expectations were beforehand, but I was absolutely astonished with the views. The ocean water was bright teal and a deep rich navy blue at the same time. We hiked past fig trees, cows, and so much greenery. We discovered that our little hike was actually part of the Camino de Santiago, which is a pilgrimage that many people travel to Spain to backpack. I will never forget this hike, and I hope to return someday!

Hometown: Littleton, Colorado

Major: Sociology; Spanish

Program: CIEE Summer Language & Culture in Alcala

I chose my program because the city has a rich history, it is not too big, and I felt that I would have a unique and immersive experience here.  My goal is to develop my confidence in speaking Spanish, as well as gaining a better understanding and appreciation for an unfamiliar culture.  I’m looking forward to visiting as many museums as I can in Alcalá.
