University of Wisconsin–Madison

England: Jeremy Alfred (My First Year of College Abroad)

I never knew that First-Year Abroad programs existed before applying to college, however I am so glad that I discovered and have had the opportunity to participate in one! I had originally decided to become a Global Launch student because it aligned well with my major, allowing me to get a head start on my International Studies directly. I also really loved London from previous visits, so being able to live in the UK for a year was something I could not pass up, and it has been amazing! And, while I do occasionally miss Madison, this experience has taught me so much more than campus could for my first-year. The level of independence I have been able to assimilate to through navigating London and living here, has been so valuable to my journey as a First-Year. In addition, I have gained many new skills that have helped me thrive, not only as a Londoner, but as an adult, such as budgeting my money, cooking/meal prepping, and managing my time so I can explore this beautiful city whilst also having time to finish my assignments! Overall, while I have not been on campus for my first year, I will return having learned all the skills and independence I need to be a successful college student!
