University of Wisconsin–Madison

England: Patrick Kahite (My First Year of College Abroad)

When I interviewed for the University of Wisconsin–Madison Global Launch in London program, I honestly did not think I would be accepted. Many interview slots were already filled, and I had completed parts of my application at the last minute, feeling like it was not my strongest work. I remember coming home afterward and seeing the postcard for the program, not thinking much of it. London was never a place I imagined myself studying, even though I knew I wanted to study abroad. At the time, my focus was clear. I wanted to become a lawyer, either a criminal defense attorney or a prosecutor, and advocate for others through the legal system.

When I learned I was being considered for Global Launch, my perspective shifted. I realized this program could feel like a gap year while still allowing me to pursue my education. That opportunity ultimately opened doors I did not know I was searching for.

One moment that truly reshaped my academic interests occurred in my sustainability class, when I attended a London School of Economics lecture connected to the COP 30 project. Hearing about how pollution from first world countries disproportionately affects developing nations deeply resonated with me. As the son of immigrants and someone who was bullied in my youth, I have always felt drawn to advocating for those who are often overlooked. That lecture helped me realize I want to pursue a human rights focus, and I now aspire to become an international human rights lawyer.

Living and learning in London has also expanded my sense of belonging. Hearing so many languages spoken daily and being a French speaker myself has made me proud to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. I was surprised by how quickly I built meaningful relationships, including friendships with local students my age, which allowed me to learn about culture beyond the classroom.

Through this program, I learned how to balance academics with personal well being, manage my time, and advocate for my mental and physical health. As I return to campus for my sophomore year, I will carry forward stronger time management, confidence in speaking up, and adaptability, skills that will help me thrive both academically and personally.
