I have been loving my time at the University of Sydney so far, with one of the highlights being the many opportunities provided to us in class. In my Measuring Biodiversity course, for example, our practical sessions are hosted at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, giving us the chance to apply what we learn in a real-world setting. At the zoo, we work directly with the staff to learn how biodiversity is monitored and managed in a conservation setting.

In this setting, we learn how to record detailed observations, learn about the different equipment used for trapping and monitoring, the importance of accurate data collection, and how to choose the best method to collect the data desired. Developing these skills is essential for this class as we have field excursions where we get to put them to the test!

At our first practical we worked on improving our observational skills. We were tasked with walking around and recording both physical and behavioral observations. I enjoyed this activity because it was my first time exploring the Zoo as well as learning about the different animals that live in Australia. Once we finished this, we then played Pictionary with the observations we recorded. This was a fun and engaging way to reinforce the importance of making clear, detailed observations, as others had to interpret and identify the animal based only on the information provided.

Overall, our first practical for Measuring Biodiversity has been different from anything I have done before. I am excited to see what we will do next time we go to the Taronga Zoo!

I am looking forward to how Sydney’s environment, both physical and natural, influences its culture and lifestyle. Sydney is very different from the Midwest, and I want to experience how living by the coast and in such a vibrant city shapes the way people live.
