How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW-Madison?

The classes at the CET study center in Florence were very different than those at UW-Madison. The professors are focused on creating an immersive learning experience, where a lot of the learning does not actually take place in the classroom. Instead of learning through lectures, readings, and videos, I learned through doing.

There is lots of nature right across the Arno River. This picture is taken by Piazzale Michelangelo and the Rose Garden.

What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?

I learned that I am capable of being independent and self-sufficient. This study abroad experience forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and take control of my life in many new ways that I had not experienced before.

What is your advice for someone considering your program?

One piece of advice I would give to someone considering the UW in Florence program is to take advantage of all that Florence has to offer. Many people plan trips to different countries every weekend, but it is so important to dedicate time to getting to know your host city. There is an endless amount of things to do and see in Florence, so make sure you use your time abroad wisely.

During class, the UW Practice of Science class, professor Lee Palmer brought students to tour a stained glass studio and learn about how stained glass is made and used around Florence.

What is a custom, food or tradition from your host country that you are taking forward?

One custom I will take from my host country is the value of taking breaks in the day to spend time with the people important to you. Whether it was a morning coffee break or early evening aperitivo, the Italians value human connection even when life gets busy.
