Spain: Aidan Riehl (Five Senses in Madrid)
Program: WIP Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Academic Year
Gran Vía is one of those places in Madrid that hits all five senses at once. Walking down the street, the first thing I notice is the sound. There’s a constant mix of traffic, people talking, music from shops, and the occasional street performer. It’s loud, but in a way that feels alive rather than overwhelming.
Visually, there’s always something to look at. The buildings, such as edificio metropolis are grand and detailed, with a mix of old architecture and modern signs. Bright storefronts and billboards compete for attention, especially at night when everything lights up and the street feels theatrical.

The Gran Vía (pictured left) is the most iconic street of Madrid.
Gran Vía isn’t calm, but that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
The smell changes as you walk. At one moment, you can smell exhaust from passing cars, and the next it’s the scent of fresh pastries or fried food coming from a nearby café or fast food place. Sometimes you catch a hint of perfume as people pass by, which adds to the feeling of movement and density.
Touch is more subtle, but still there—the warmth of the sun beating down, the press of people brushing past you, even the pavement under your feet feels worn from years of constant use.
And then there’s taste, which is usually the pastry I’ve picked up along the way. Madrid’s cuisine is absolutely spectacular.

I chose my program because I’ve always wanted to live in a super big city, and Madrid is the largest city in Spain. I’m super excited to involve myself in Madrid’s famous gay community!
