Spain: Waleska Martinez (“We’re not in Madison Anymore” Moment)
Program: CIEE Barcelona Business and Culture, Spring
I can’t believe I’m already halfway through my study abroad journey. It has been such a beautiful and unforgettable experience, and honestly, nothing could have fully prepared me for it.
As a first-generation student, this experience has been bittersweet. I feel incredibly grateful to be here in Barcelona. I often find myself reflecting during my walks to the metro or while trying new cafés before class. Sitting there with my matcha, it hits me that I’m really not in Madison anymore. No snow, no farmer’s markets, and definitely no cheese smell on every block. Just a new culture, new energy, and a completely different pace of life.
One moment that really reminded me I wasn’t in Madison happened during my first week. I was out to eat with friends, and after we finished, we just kept sitting there…waiting. I kept wondering why the waiter hadn’t brought the check. He walked by, smiled, and kept going. At that point, I was confused and a little tired, thinking…are we supposed to just stay here forever?
That’s when I realized that in Barcelona, people truly live in the moment. There’s no rush or pressure to leave. You take your time and enjoy the experience. Even the no-tipping culture surprised me, since it’s so different from what I’m used to.
Of course, I miss home sometimes, especially the food, but this experience has shown me how much growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. If you’re thinking about studying abroad, go for it. It’s truly worth it because you learn so much about yourself.
