What is your most memorable experience from your program?
There were so many aspects of this program that were memorable it’s hard to pick a single one, however, the dynamic of the group I spent my time with in New Zealand truly made my experiences what they were. The students in New Zealand were so curious, engaged, and adventurous which really inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. Everyone worked together as a team and it made learning about kinesiology less intimidating and the experience more fun.

What did you learn about yourself or the world because of your experience?
During our time in New Zealand, we learned a lot about native Māori culture by integrating cultural learning into our experiences. My biggest takeaway from spending time in a new culture was that there are many more qualities that connect people from different cultures than qualities that separate us. It was very refreshing to see two groups with very different cultural backgrounds come together and share their time with a lot of respect and curiosity for one another.
Being surrounded by such an adventurous group encouraged me to try new things. Some made me nervous but I knew I was supported in my group and we all encouraged each other throughout all the activities.

What is your advice for someone considering your program?
I believe that my experiences in New Zealand were so memorable because I, along with the other students, always kept an open mind. Flexibility is key to an experience like this one where we were constantly learning and trying new things. It’s important to be organized but it’s just as important to have an open mind to try new things and be able to pivot.
