Spain: Chris Bottari-Tower (Final Reflections)

ProgramSaint Louis University-Madrid, Spring

As this program comes to an end, it’s hard to put into words how much Madrid has come to mean to me. What started as a new and unfamiliar place quickly turned into somewhere that feels like home.

There’s something about the culture here that stands out. It’s rich, genuine, and present in everyday life. Compared to other major European cities, Madrid feels more grounded and approachable, which made it easier for me to settle in and truly enjoy my time here.

This is a picture of a beautiful domed church in Madrid, called the sistine chapel of Madrid.

One of my biggest takeaways is how much I’ve grown by stepping outside of my comfort zone. Whether it was speaking Spanish with my host mom or building friendships with local students, I challenged myself every day. At first, conversations took effort, but over time they became more natural, and I could see real progress. That growth didn’t just improve my language skills, it gave me confidence in unfamiliar situations and helped me feel more connected to the community around me.

Another highlight of this experience has been getting involved in the city’s sports culture. Following teams like Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid gave me a deeper appreciation for how passionate people here are. Watching matches surrounded by fans, all fully invested in the moment, created an atmosphere that’s hard to describe unless you experience it yourself. It was more than just a game; it was a shared sense of identity and pride.

A lasting memory I’ll carry with me is the feeling of being immersed in a culture that is so vibrant and alive. From daily conversations to the way people dress and express themselves, I’ve picked up small pieces of life here that I hope to bring back with me.

More than anything, I leave Madrid feeling grateful: for the opportunity, the people I’ve met, and the growth I’ve experienced along the way.
