Program: UW Global Launch in London, Academic Year

On September 15, I took a brief, sunny afternoon stroll around Camden Town to visit the famous music store, All Ages Records. Camden, known for its alternative music scene, busy market, and colorful streets, was recommended to me multiple times when I mentioned my love for live music. Immediately upon exiting the train station, I was greeted by colorful graffiti walls and pubs advertising upcoming metal, punk, and indie shows. As I made my way towards the record store, I passed an old brick building with an easy-to-miss placard marking the site as a former residence of writer Charles Dickens. Small sites like these are a large part of what makes London so special to me; there is history everywhere if you look for it! When I arrived at All Ages, I was immediately struck by the wide selection of underground, vintage, and local records and CDs. After spending some time perusing and photographing records I would listen to later, I had a good conversation with an employee about upcoming local shows and New York hardcore before I left to see Camden Market.

Camden Market is mostly known for selling clothing and trinkets that appeal to a more alternative audience, so thankfully, the crowds weren’t terrible. I took my time looking through the amazingly chunky boots on display in many of the shoe stores, and fortunately for my suitcase, I did not buy any! Once I took my loop around the beautiful brick complex, I headed home.

While the market has undeniably evolved into a more corporate, less organic environment, Camden Town is still flourishing with gigs, art, and alternative pubs. I can already see myself returning for a concert or two!

I am very excited about the specific classes the Global Launch in London program has to offer, as I am very interested in 20th century history! I hope to challenge myself this year by balancing academics and all the amazing activities London has to offer.

I look forward to meeting as many different people as I can! London has such a diverse culture with citizens from all over the world, which is very different from where I’m from in Appleton.
