England: Vanessa Correa (Forest Bathing)

Program: UW Global Launch in London, Academic Year

Forest bathing at Primrose Hill gave me an opportunity to slow down and connect myself with nature again. As I looked around, I saw children no older than 10 years old playing catch with their parents, families spending time together, and people enjoying a nice lunch on the grass. The atmosphere felt very peaceful and welcoming. I could smell the fresh cut grass, and some parts of the hill were slightly damp from the morning rain. Something that brought me claim during this activity was simply people watching and living in the moment. I did not feel that indeed to do anything particular, just simply sitting and observing my surroundings was enough to make me feel relaxed.

As I listed carefully, I noticed several noses, such as children’s laughter, birds chirping, crows flying above, leaves rustling in the wind, and footsteps passing nearby. I counted around five distinct sounds. In between these noises, the moments of stillness felt comforting and gave me a chance to pause and appreciate where I was. During the experience, I wondered how often I overlook the simple everyday moments because I am too focused on my responsibilities. Spending time at Primrose Hill helped me realize that connecting with nature does not necessarily mean being completely alone or somewhere remote. Sometimes it means appreciating the environment and the people around you.

I would like to repeat this activity by visiting another park far out of Kensington, leaving my phone aside, and taking time to observe my surroundings. This experience reminds me that slowing down and enjoying the present can bring a sense of calm to everyday life.

An open field with people sitting looking at the London skyline in the distance.
Enjoying the view.
