The view from the top of St. Peter’s Basilica dome

Standing atop St. Peter’s Basilica dome in Vatican City and looking out over Rome is an awe-inspiring experience. The sweeping panoramic views of the city, from the historic landmarks to the busy streets, evoke a feeling of wonder and appreciation for the culture of Rome and how truly grateful I am to call the city home for four months. However, this view also had an unexpected effect on me.

Surprisingly, despite the liveliness of the streets below and Rome’s immense scale, I felt a sense of peace and comfort. It helped put any of my worries and concerns into perspective. The experience was both humbling and reassuring at the same time.

In addition to the stunning views from the dome, Vatican City is home to breathtaking art and architecture. The Vatican Museums house many masterpieces ranging from ancient Roman sculptures to renaissance pieces by Michelangelo and Raphael. Every corner is a feast for the eyes, from the details of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling to the grandeur of the Gallery of Maps.

And, to top it all off, St. Peter’s Basilica is its own masterpiece. Decorated with intricate mosaics, sculptures, and frescoes, the largest church in the world is a lasting testament to the skill and artistry of renaissance artists and architects. Every detail is a marvel of craftsmanship, and along with its rich history, it leaves no doubt as to why it is one of the most iconic symbols of Rome and Vatican City.

Visiting the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica should not be missed. From the captivating art to the breathtaking views, it’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to visit.

I chose the CIEE Rome study abroad program because of the unique opportunity it presents to immerse myself in the rich history and culture of Rome while also having access to the extensive resources and support of the CIEE program. Rome, itself, is a major draw with its stunning architecture, vibrant arts and culture, and delicious food. Additionally, the CIEE program offers academic and extracurricular opportunities, as well as support services, which will enhance my experience. The combination of the city of Rome and the resources of the CIEE program make it the perfect choice for my study abroad experience.
