Traditional Aboriginal dancing

Wominjeka! This unfamiliar word has been the common greeting of “Hello/Welcome” for the Wurundjeri people, the traditional owners of Melbourne. When I first arrived at Monash University, I was warmly welcomed to campus with an official Smoking and Welcome to Country ceremony, where we acknowledged and paid respect to the Elders and Traditional Custodians of the land on which all Australian campuses stand. I was able to witness traditional dancing, which was accompanied by Aboriginal music and instruments. Not only do I see a lot of inclusivity and respect for the Traditional Owners at Monash University, but also in the wider community of Melbourne.

Prior to my arrival in Melbourne, I had traveled directly to Sydney with my older sister. I was afraid that I’d find myself quite lonely after having spent such an enjoyable week with her. However, I was greeted by many friendly faces during my early arrival on campus.

The people have been so immensely welcoming and friendly, going out of their way to greet me, or introducing themselves. I instantly connected with a group of exchange students from all over the world. Being surrounded by people of all different backgrounds, I’ve been able to become more globally aware. I love learning about other countries while also experiencing Australian culture.

Melbourne really has proven to be a culturally diverse city. During orientation week, I attended the Queen Victoria Night Market. It was an unforgettable night of shopping, eating, live music, fun and summer sunset vibes. My friends and I would try different global street food trucks – including lobster rolls, fried rice, pork tacos, and much more. Needless to say, my friends and I were very full by the end of the night.

As uni life begins, I look forward to getting involved in my coursework, meeting new people, and experiencing more of what Melbourne has to offer.
