England: Cindy Liu (Places: Routine and Favorite)

The shadow of a castle with several tall spires and the shadow of Big Ben with the clock itself illuminated at dusk.

I started my study abroad journey at the age of 12 and I have lived in 2 different countries, 4 different cities since then. Although it wasn’t new for me to start a life in a completely new city, I still felt nervous and anxious before coming to London. Everything felt so thrilling and new, but scary in every sense. Summer went by fast and the next thing that I realized, I was already on the airplane flying to the UK. I am really doing it, I thought to myself.

The night I moved into my hall, I went on a little walk to discover the Parliament and Big Ben. They looked so different from during the day when surrounded by crowds of people, they were just sitting there now, peaceful and quiet. All of a sudden I felt a bit of relief: everything will come together. Because I know one reason for sure that I have pushed myself out here is to get out of my comfort zone, to be challenged, to be different, and to become a cosmopolitan who is willing to explore the world even when there are doubts. And it is okay to be scared because even the Parliament will be left standing there lonely at night. Just always remember there will be sunshine that comes through during the day, and everything will be alright again.

Every day on my way to the campus I cross the London Bridge and pass right by the London Eye and the Big Ben, it has been my favorite part of the day. They are like a constant reminder to me that I am strong enough to face new challenges, fit into this city, and fully embrace what it will offer. I found such joyfulness and peace on my walk feeling the little breeze on my face brought by the River Thames. They are my favorite places in London because they make me feel like I belong.
