England: Kayla Buth (Learning on Excursions)
Learning on Excursions

Selecting England as my study abroad destination was primarily influenced by its profound legal history spanning for centuries. Professor Karl Shoemaker’s “Medieval Law and Society” course at UW-Madison sparked my interest in the complex legal institutions of Medieval England. One particularly captivating aspect that captured my attention was the practice of claiming sanctuary. During certain periods in Medieval England, fugitives could seek refuge in holy grounds, typically within a cathedral or church, to evade legal consequences. However, claiming sanctuary often meant the necessity of permanent exile from the country. While learning about sanctuary practices, Westminster Abbey, located in London, was frequently cited as a prominent venue where individuals sought refuge. Thus, when I got the opportunity to partake in an excursion to London to see Westminster Abbey, I could not be more excited.
This excursion has been a highlight of my time abroad so far. The church was so incredibly beautiful. The architecture was amazing and there was so much history to learn about! While touring, I learned that many royal weddings have taken place in this church, so many important figures in history, such as Queen Elizabeth I, are entombed here, and more. The history truly was endless. However, the most remarkable aspect of visiting Westminster Abbey was truly having the opportunity to actually visit a site that has been so influential to my academic studies of legal history. Knowing that individuals have claimed sanctuary in the church was so incredible. Being able to enrich myself in the exact history that I spend semesters learning about has enhanced my studies more than I could have ever of imagined. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to visit Westminster Abbey, and I cannot wait to continue to explore the rich history of England.
