Food in Leeds

One of the biggest surprises upon arriving in Leeds was how different the food was from that in the United States. Despite the presence of many of the same food categories and even brands, the taste and ingredients differed significantly.
This is especially apparent at the grocery store, as items such as bread and poultry must be purchased from the bakery or butcher. Furthermore, with much cleaner ingredients and fewer preservatives, food here expires much more quickly. As a result, I found myself going to the grocery store almost daily instead of bi-weekly. Although there are many clean food options in the United States, it is much more accessible and affordable in Leeds at large.
A major influence on Leeds cuisine (and the United Kingdom as a whole) is fish. I had never tried fish and chips before my arrival, and I was a bit apprehensive, as I am not particularly fond of fish at home. However, I decided it was customary to try it, and I was pleasantly surprised. Every restaurant where I have tried the dish has exceeded my expectations. Nonetheless, I am still not accustomed to the large fresh fish section at the supermarket.
Lastly, breakfast is such an important meal in Leeds! There are breakfast restaurants and cafes at every corner. I have had some of the best breakfast dishes of my life while studying here. It is also so nice to get a fresh breakfast at a local spot before starting the day. I admire the culture’s emphasis on the meal instead of just grabbing something quick and running out of the door! A traditional English breakfast includes baked beans, which was extremely surprising. I normally stick to eggs, toast, and a latte!
