England: Sahana Prasad (A home away from home in London)
Growing up in a Pennsylvania suburb and even living in Madison, driving, or walking were my main methods of transportation. In a big city such as London, taking the Tube, London’s subway system, or the bus are the easiest and most cost-effective ways to get around. I prefer to take the Tube because it is the slightly faster option. Whether it be getting to class or meeting friends, opening maps on my phone and having a minimum 20-minute Tube commute has become a staple of my London life.

Covent Garden is one of my favorite spots in London. The area is filled with shopping and food, but I love the area for its positive energy. London is a fast-paced city, but in Covent Garden everyone slows down and is thoroughly enjoying themselves, whether they are tourists or locals. That environment puts a smile on my face and always makes me look forward to going back to the area. It’s also been home to several memories; I’ve reconnected with old friends, had long conversations with other ones, and spent time by myself exploring the area.

Another favorite spot of mine is Notting Hill and its Portobello Market. To me, the area has a similar energy to Covent Garden of peace and positivity. Everyone you see is immersed in what the area offers, and it’s a great way to spend a Saturday in the city. Portobello Road is lined with carts full of vintage technology or modern-day jewelry, among other things, and close by are the colorful houses that are characteristic of Notting Hill. I’ve also been able to see some of the spots of the Notting Hill movie starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, such as the famous blue door and the Notting Hill Bookshop.
One of my other favorite spots is Primrose Hill. A bit outside the city center, it’s probably one of the few places in London that has elevation. At the top of the hill, you get a gorgeous view of the city skyline, and the area is primarily filled with locals. It’s not too crowded and is incredibly peaceful, but I would not have known about it if I didn’t live in the city. It’s a place where I can spend time with my thoughts and with those I care about while also appreciating how beautiful and rich of a city London is.
